About Us

How We Began

Founding Director, Lucy Powell explains…

Taking a year sabbatical from my role as a frustrated social worker, I set off alone, to Spain on my recently purchased motorbike in search of a better way to live. Serendipity had introduced me to two kindred spirits where my journey with a concept called ‘Permaculture’ began. The creative way in which it was subsequently taught demonstrated that, permaculture had so much more to offer than just an interesting way of gardening. ‘Permaculture is an ecologically sound approach to providing for our needs, including food, shelter and social structures. It is based on co-operating with nature and caring for the Earth and its people.’

At the heart of permaculture is a fundamental desire to do what we believe to be right and to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. The ethics of permaculture can be summed up as:

Earth Care

The notion that humans must look after the Earth and all her living systems, which we are part of. Protection of the Earth must be one of our highest priorities.

Future Care

The earth can only survive in a healthy state if we match our consumption to need and not greed. Reconnecting with local resources will promote move towards a more sustainable society.

People Care

Catering for real human needs. Self reliance becomes more feasible when we focus on non material well being and focus on taking good care of ourselves and others.

Light Bulb Moment

It was a significant moment when I realised the link

It was a significant moment when I realised the link between what I was learning and my development of understanding as a social worker. I recognised that the principles and values that nature demonstrates can be reflected in our society and communities; the way that relationships work and interact is integral to sustainability and resilience. This common sense approach became obvious. Visiting the centre in Spain I saw the beauty, complexity, productivity, abundance, growth, health and vibrancy and realised that this just didn’t happen into existence, it was created using principles and design. So, I stared to imagine how I could create these qualities in myself, my home, work and community.
The realisation that people’s habitats and lifestyles restrict opportunity for sustainability and my enthusiasm to use permaculture beyond the garden led us to create ‘OUTSIDE LIVES LTD’.

‘Permaculture is an ecologically sound approach to providing for our needs, including food, shelter and social structures.  It is based on co-operating with nature and caring for the Earth and its people.’
